Feb. 23 a holiday for students — Palace
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared Monday a special holiday for all private and public schools in observance of the 23rd anniversary of the People Power uprising that restored democracy in the country.
Arroyo did not declare a holiday for workers after a “consensus” was reached in the labor sector to avoid non-payment of a day’s pay to contractual and casual employees, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said.
The President declared Monday a holiday for schools under Proclamation 1728, which she signed on Thursday.
The 23rd anniversary of the first People Power uprising that overthrew the Marcos dictatorship falls on Wednesday, February 25.
