MANILA, Philippines – Dozens of farmers pushing for agrarian reform were blocked on their way to Malacañang on Wednesday noon.
The members of Task Force Mapalad were stopped under the Nagtahan flyover, after police carrying shields blocked the entrance to Jose P. Laurel Street, which leads to the Palace.
The march coincided with the 23rd anniversary of the military-backed, bloodless People Power revolt in 1986 that toppled the Marcos dictatorship and restored democracy in the country.
Last week, farmers from the same group also failed to march to the Palace after they were blocked at the foot of the Don Chino Roces Bridge in the Mendiola district.
Congress has not passed a law extending the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), but approved a watered-down resolution.
