MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang appealed to the political opposition not to “grandstand” at the expense of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, who was slapped with an impeachment complaint at the House of Representatives on Monday.
“We urge the opposition not to politicize and grandstand. We have to give due process to the Ombudsman. Huwag nating pabayaan magkaroon ng trial by publicty [Let us not allow a trial by publicity],” deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said.
Fajardo told reporters at the Palace that the impeachment process would be a “good opportunity for the Ombudsman to explain herself.”
“We respect the seriousness of this [impeachment] process,” she said.
The complaint against Gutierrez stemmed from her alleged “inaction” on and “mishandling” of dismissed graft cases.
Gutierrez is a law school classmate of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s husband, Jose Miguel, who has been linked to numerous corruption scandals, the most recent of which is the alleged rigging of bids for infrastructure projects funded by the World Bank.
