MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo pushed for the “faster” resolution of human rights cases before the courts, saying the “world is waiting for more convictions.”

At the same time, Arroyo cited the government’s “gains” in improving its human rights record, as shown by the “huge drop” in the number of extrajudicial killings in the last two years.

“I ask the support of the Women Judges Association to make it our joint advocacy so that human rights cases can move faster in the courts because the world is waiting for more convictions,” the President said in a speech during a luncheon she hosted for lady judges at the Palace on Thursday.

“Human right condition in any state is always a work in progress,” Arroyo said, adding that the country faced “many challenges” to its rights record.
