MANILA, Philippines—The government will provide protection to police Senior Superintendent Cesar Mancao when he is extradited to the country from the United States since he is a witness in the 2000 Dacer-Corbito murder, Malacañang said.

But Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita belied Senator Panfilo Lacson’s allegation that the Palace was convincing Mancao to implicate him in the case.

Lacson was chief of the Philippine National Police when public relations man Bubby Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito, were murdered. Mancao served as Lacson’s aide.

“It’s the duty of the government to ensure the safety of witnesses of anybody involved in such cases especially the celebrated ones. Therefore, you can be assured that appropriate security will be provided to Superintendent Mancao if and when he comes to the Philippines,” Ermita told reporters at the Palace.

“I don’t know about the allegation of Senator Lacson about the hand of Malacañang in convincing Mancao,” he said.

Ermita said the Palace was for “anything that will lead to the unveiling of the truth” in high profile cases such as the Dacer-Corbito murders.

“Even the good senator says it’s better if the truth will finally come out,” Ermita said.

The lawyer of the Dacer family, Demetrio Custodio, said Mancao had apologized to the late PR man’s daughter, Katrina, during a recent extradition hearing in the United States.

Mancao also executed an affidavit naming the masterminds in the murders, Custodio said, but declined to name names since a case is pending before a Manila court.
