MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang said the impending testimony of former police senior superintendent Cesar Mancao on the murders of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito should not be politicized and the case resolved without shortcuts.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita issued the statement amid allegations by Senator Panfilo Lacson that the Palace was pressuring Mancao to implicate the lawmaker in the 2000 murders.
“I would even dare say, let’s not politicize this. Fairness and justice [are] at stake in cases like this,” Ermita told a news conference in Malacañang on Wednesday.
Ermita said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wants the resolution of “important” cases as her legacy.
“But the important thing is that there should be no shortcuts. It should be done in a proper, legal way,” he said.
Mancao, one of those charged for the Dacer-Corbito murders, was formerly with the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force (PAOCTF) and served as an aide to Lacson when the senator was chief of the Philippine National Police.
Mancao is to be extradited to the country from the United States in two weeks, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez has said.
