MANILA, Philippines — Tarlac Representative Monica Prieto-Teodoro is hoping her husband, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., gets President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s endorsement to run for president in 2010 so she can pursue her children’s welfare advocacy as first lady.
For his part, Albay Representative Edcel Lagman said Teodoro’s declaration of his intention to run may have ended the administration’s search for a standard bearer.
“If ever I become first lady, it’s because I have a job to do, which is to take care of the Filipino children… I’m hoping that happens because Filipino children really need help,” Representative Teodoro told reporters during a chance interview in Malacañang.
She said her husband did the right thing when he sought Arroyo’s endorsement.
“Now, it’s up to the Filipino to actually put him in Malacañang because, as far as qualifications, my husband has the cleanest record,” she said. “I hope people are smart enough to realize his potential and that he sincerely wants to make a difference, not because he wants to be in the limelight or because it’s prestigious.”
Lagman, a member of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) party, told the Serye forum in Quezon City: “I think the administration party might have found a candidate and the search might be over because others probably are either not scoring well in the surveys or ambivalent in their candidacy. Here is someone who really wants to run and is well-qualified and [a] no-nonsense guy.”
Teodoro belongs to the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), which also counts Senators Loren Legarda and Francis Escudero, both reportedly also eyeing presidential bids.
At the same forum, Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez, a member of the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi, Partner of the Free Filipino), the party Arroyo founded, said Teodoro possesses the qualifications to be president but should get the nod of both Lakas and Kampi, as well as the President’s endorsement.
Lakas and KAMPI are currently working on a merger to field a single standard bearer and ensure an administration victory in the 2010 polls.
Lagman said Teodoro has “outstanding credentials for the presidency, [is] a no-nonsense guy, and [is] candid enough not to shy away from being identified with the President.”
With the declaration, Lagman said the administration has “a credible and qualified candidate.”
The Teodoro couple have one child, Jaime Gilberto.
On Wednesday, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and Presidential Political Adviser Gabriel Claudio were all praises for the defense chief, but said he would have to go through the selection process for the administration standard bearer.
