MANILA, Philippines – An “angry” President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has called a meeting of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) on Thursday to determine why six suspected drug lords continue to evade arrest and who should be made accountable for this.
“She wants to know what really happened, whose heads will roll, why they escaped, who helped them escape and how to get them back,” DDB chairman Vicente Sotto III told reporters in a chance interview in Malacañang.
“She is angry because of reports that these suspects escaped, so she wants it plugged. She wants the loopholes plugged,” he said.
The six suspects include Anthony Ang, who was allegedly behind the attempt to smuggle in P5 billion worth of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) intercepted at the Subic Bay Freeport.
Ang has reportedly fled to China.
Sotto did not identify the five other suspects.
Arroyo will not be attending an anti-illegal drugs march along Roxas Boulevard in Manila on Saturday, because she will be attending an important provincial engagement, Sotto said.
He said he would represent Arroyo at the Batang Iwas Droga (BIDA) march, through which government hopes to land in the Guinness Book of World Records by mobilizing 500,000 students.
