SAN JUAN, Batangas–The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare, is set to meet with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo over the weekend, the Palace said Wednesday.
Arroyo and Somare are expected to discuss a possible joint venture in fisheries and the Coral Triangle. These are the waters between the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands, a prime source of fish, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the Coral Triangle provides a spawning ground and migratory routes for tuna caught in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans, accounting for 70 percent of the world’s tuna catch.
Somare is scheduled to arrive in the country Saturday, and would join Arroyo in the Boracay Island, before proceeding to General Santos City, the country’s tuna capital.
